Design: by Robert Frost.
The image of a white spider holding onto a white moth like a paper kite definitely sticks out in my mind. Also, if one didn’t know better, the “white heal-all” would effortlessly plant the image of a “white” flower in one’s mind. All these images are those that capture a reader’s first approach to reading the poem.
The title itself is a short insight of what the poem might be about. Of course design means to create, fashion, execute, or construct according to plan. The poem illustrates the plan that nature has mapped out for almost every living thing here on earth. Even in the most simple creatures are found associated with the great chain of life. We all must feed on other organisms in order to survive. This is the beauty in life, yet it is a process that is found cruel when looked from a different perspective: how could such a small and beautiful creature such as a spider kill another lovely organism like the white moth?
One image that I found intriguing was that of the spider making its way up, carrying the moth, to the heal-all. The heal-all is described as “white” in the poem. I found this very ironic when in fact heal-alls are really a violet-blue color. This perhaps is symbolic of creating a setting for the spider and his “work”. The spider kill to survive, it is as simple as that. The “white” heal-all serves as a light setting to back up the cruel intentions of the spider, leading us to analyze for ourselves that the spider isn’t in fact cruel at all but is doing what it possibly can to survive in its state.
Another point that I found interesting was that the flower heal-all, also known as “all-heal” and “self-heal”, contains medicinal properties. It is used as herbal medicine. I found this also very ironic that the spider is making the effort to carry its prey, probably injected with the spider’s venom, to the top of a plant that is used for healing. It is very really funny to me in a way. It almost seem like the spider felt guilty of what his actions were and carried the moth on top to a heal-all to make himself feel better, maybe even hoping for the moth to heal and spring back to life. Frost created an interesting picture of such simple yet sophisticated way how nature works.
